The Dark Side of Unconditional Love
Anyone who has been abused by a family member, or a partner, understands unconditional love.
I mean, when was the last time someone punched you in the face? How long did you think about it? You were probably most of the way past it by the time you had the tooth fixed, or the stitches taken out.
On the other hand, you just can’t let the casual remark, or the push, or the backhander go. Maybe not ever. And the ligature that binds you to that moment in time is love.
There is a dimension to it; it remains lodged somewhere in your body, long after the bruise has turned yellow and fully risen out of your skin.
There is no choice in love. All love is, by definition, unconditional; that’s where the risk is. And that’s why the deepest betrayal is the betrayal you visit upon yourself.
