Rob Powdrill is one of the stalwarts of Australian Muay Thai. With a swag of titles to his credit and forays into both MMA and boxing, Rob has been around the traps – the long way. He tells JARROD BOYLE about training in Thailand, why fighting ruins your working life, how much fun you can have with just one nostril and why you should never tie your shorts to your groin guard. Congratulations, Mick and Josina
Posted in Observation with tags A Midsummer Night's Dream, Josina Murray, marriage, Mick Valentine, Puck, Shakespeare, wedding on August 24, 2014 by Jarrod BoyleMick Valentine married Josina Murray on Saturday. He’s a lucky man; she’s a wonderful woman. I’m sure they deserve each other. I wish for them all the very best.
“If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended –
That you have but slumbered here
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend.
If you pardon, we will mend.
And, as I am an honest Puck,
If we have unearned luck
Now to ‘scape the serpent’s tongue,
We will make amends ere long;
Else the Puck a liar call.
So, good night unto you all.
Give me your hands, if we be friends,
And Robin shall restore amends.”
-Shakespeare,
A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

I was deeply impressed to read his public apology posted on his personal website shortly after.
The man has the courage of his convictions.

The greatest careers are marked by severe vicissitudes of fate. Fight fans talk about the great clashes; Aerts and Hoost, Hunt and Sefo, Hari and Karaev. What they don’t talk about are the ups and downs a professional fighter goes through from fight to fight, like a ship that sails on a stormy sea. Continue reading
The Dark Side of Unconditional Love
Posted in Observation, Reading with tags Bill Sikes, Charles Dickens, Nancy, Oliver Twist on August 12, 2014 by Jarrod BoyleIt is said that unconditional love is the kind of love we should aspire to; it’s the state of loving in which you love someone, regardless of whether they love you in return, or even treat you well. It is to achieve a state of selflessness as a result of your feelings.
It has occurred to me that this is not always a good thing. Continue reading
