Gokhan Saki’s Nike Ad

Posted in Kickboxing, Real Men with tags , , on September 20, 2013 by Jarrod Boyle

This Nike ad features Dutch-Turkish kickboxer, Gokhan Saki.

He must be the first kickboxer ever to make it to a Nike ad. It’s proof of how good he is and how big a sport kickboxing is in Turkey.

I am proud to say I knew him when.

Revenge of the beard!

Revenge of the beard!

International Kickboxer Magazine, March/April 2013

In Queensland, people grow all kinds of crazy things in their backyards. At Jamie Stamp’s house in Ormeau, it happens to be a kickboxing gym.

“It started off as a small shed down the back of the house,” says Jamie. “Since Anthony [Vella] has come along, the place has grown in leaps and bounds. It’s getting bigger and bigger! We’ve already got six of our regular fighters matched for February, and there’s fifteen or so fighters down there altogether.” Continue reading

The day I talked to Peter, he was managing multiple tasks and unsure I’d be able to get any sense out of him.

“I’ve just come from ten rounds of sparring!” Continue reading

Posted in Kickboxing with tags , , , on October 27, 2012 by Jarrod Boyle

This is old news, but the recently elected mayor of Amsterdam, Eberhard van der Laan, has been charged by his constituency with the task of ‘cleaning up the city’. Many people will have heard of this in relation to preventing non-Dutch people going into the city to smoke weed. Van der Laan has also moved to outlaw kickboxing and MMA ‘galas’. Continue reading

Anthony 'The Hitman' Vella

Posted in Kickboxing with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 8, 2012 by Jarrod Boyle

Anthony ‘The Hitman’ Vella was one of the outstanding fighters of early Australian Muay Thai. He had twenty fights for nineteen wins; his only loss coming via injury while fighting Paul ‘The Hurricane’ Briggs for a super-middleweight world title. Before I met him, I walked past this picture every day on my way into the gym.  Continue reading

The Herald-Sun newspaper dated March 2, 2012 featured an article about head trauma in sports, written by Andrew Rule. You can read it at:

Let’s face it; head injury is the big fucking elephant in the room at my house. Continue reading

Kickboxing Showreel – Updated

Posted in Kickboxing with tags , , , , , , , , , on January 17, 2012 by Jarrod Boyle

My updated kickboxing showreel, courtesy of Nick Moore. He’s been joking about making a version where I sustain all the hits. Probably not a bad idea – there’s probably more than a few people who would enjoy it.

“In a thousand years, there will be no men and women, just wankers.”

-Mark Renton,

Trainspotting.

My internet home page is set to The Age Newspaper Online. I like to skim over it before reading my emails; it helps orient me for the day. Of late, however, reading The Age has begun to get me down. Apparently, I live in the quintessential Australian city, and the best, most polite word I can use to describe it is aspirational.
